BDR Thermea Group

I completed my internship at BDR Thermea Group Apeldoorn. BDR Thermea is a multinational company that offers heating, cooling, and hot water solutions for a wide range of applications, from residential to commercial buildings. The company was founded in 2009 by merging the leading heating solution companies BAXI, De Dietrich and Remeha into one concern. BDR Thermea has now grown to become one of the largest companies in the field, they have multiple departments, offices and production lines spread around the globe. During my internship, I worked in Apeldoorn in daily contact with the Research and Development department in Schweinfurt, Germany. The company has recently invested great efforts in research for the options of renewable transition and electrification on the consumption side. Indicating this they tested hybrid (gasboiler heat pump, hydrogen boiler – heat pump) systems along with pure heat pump solutions. For larger projects BDR not only offers products, but systematic solutions, where efficiency comes into play. During my internship assignment, I was asked to investigate Domestic Hot Water generation and consumption for different types of commercial buildings. A common mistake when designing a DHW system is the over dimensioning (Teet-Andrus Koiv A. M., 2013). The oversized system is reliably provides the required DHW need, but on the other hand it is not efficient from an energetic point of view. The most up to date design methodes investigate DHW consumption profiles to estimate the sizes of system elements. In many European countries regulations require that a certain percentage of primer energy consumption be covered by renewable energy sources. Consequently, there is significant attention on enhancing efficiency, to make sure the requirements are met. Given the above, it is in the interest of a company such as BDR Thermea to have a reliable picture of the building's DHW consumption before the building is even constructed.

All in all, I consider the internship as a great oportunity to develope professionally and BDR Thermea is a company, where - according to my experiences - everyone was welcoming and helpful in this regard.
