VIRO Hengelo

VIRO is an international engineering company with offices in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Currently, about 900 employees work for clients worldwide in various market segments. VIRO is specialized in engineering and project management, providing clients with both technical expertise and additional staffing. The market segments are mechanical engineering, semiconductor industry, automotive, processing industry, energy, industrial and non-residential construction, food industry, offshore industry, amusement attractions, aerospace and last but not least defence. During my internship, I had to design an install tool and a bracket set for a JIB Crane to be connected to a machine in the semiconductor industry. This had to be done within a broad range of requirements, limited operating time, little personnel, tight operating space, small tolerances and in a cleanroom environment. The design of the install tool and bracket set had to be such that for example possible deviations and errors were corrected. This enabled operators to easily locate the crane which was 2.5m in height and had a mass of 500kg.

In the first two weeks, I followed VIRO’s introduction program such that I knew how VIRO operated, how all programs worked and how to start working with the CAD/CAM program Siemens NX. Working at the mechanical engineering department in Hengelo, I made several concepts, did calculations to check my design, presented my ideas, took part in project meetings and documented my progress and results. All my colleagues were ready to help me and let me feel like I was at home. Also, my supervisors were extremely useful, helped me when needed and gave proper guidance during my internship. The atmosphere was cheerful and I felt like a full member of the team rather than just being a student doing his internship. Mainly I worked at the office, but also a few times at home. I had the freedom to start my days between 7.30h and 9.00h. I would highly recommend taking your internship at VIRO if you want to truly experience working in a multidisciplinary project environment at an excellent engineering firm!
