Public Abstract – Torben Jansen – Internship at CEC Haren GmbH & Co. KG

CEC Haren GmbH & Co KG. (CEC) is a German Company based in Twist, Lower Saxony at the border with the Netherlands. CEC stands for Clean Energy Conversion and the company contributes to the reduction of CO2 in the transportation and mobility sector as well as in the agriculture sector by providing green hydrogen. The hydrogen is produced, distributed and sold with the facilities owned by CEC. The facilities include the wind farm Fehndorf-Lindloh, an energy storage field with an electrolyzer, battery storage system and a connection to the gas grid of Open Grid Europe, and an H2 refueling station for fuel cell electric vehicles with additional electric chargers for electric vehicles.

The internship I conducted at CEC was focused on the technical analysis of the value chain of green hydrogen - from production to consumption. The approach used consisted of a theoretical comparison with a practical-oriented goal setting. In doing so, I conducted a literature-based analysis of the conversion of energy, distribution of hydrogen and demand of hydrogen in the case of CEC. Based on this, case scenarios were formed and a decentralized production of hydrogen based on curtailment energy data from the wind farm in 2021 and 2022 was simulated. The outcomes of my internship assignment are implementation recommendations for each part of the value chain as well as production amounts of hydrogen and utilization rates of the facilities owned by CEC. During my time at CEC, I got more insights into the industry connected to my study (Sustainable Energy Technology) than I would have thought before starting this assignment. I felt welcome at any moment and enjoyed working in such a positive work environment. Communication within the company was always easy, I received feedback for my personal development and, in case of doubt, help and guidance were always available. At CEC it was possible to apply the theory I learned at University practically. All in all, I enjoyed my time at CEC in Twist.
