The effects of shade formation on and the usage of power electronics in photovoltaic (PV) systems are analysed in this study. A lot of inverters and power electronics devices are available on the market and all kinds of combinations are possible. In this study, the performance of multiple inverters, power optimizers and  PV panels are tested and compared while subjected to various shading patterns.

It was tested by applying shadow patterns on different panels and comparing the power output. Wooden frames were made to expose 16 PV panels to sunlight. Shades that were often found on Dutch rooftops were analysed and collected. It was found that shade from a tree or a chimney several meters from the panels already resulted in a complete loss of power output, just as covering any cell with cardboard or a steel plate. The power loss is explained in detail based on the working principle of PV panels and the relevant components. The main goal that is achieved during the internship is the accumulate knowledge about the systems and the test results supporting this knowledge. It was a very interesting and educational internship with collaboration with experts but a lot of freedom to find your own path.
